THE ROAD ITSELF

Manali → Kaza Road Route

The route every taxi, rental, and package follows — via the Atal Tunnel and Kunzum Pass. Distances are approximate and measured from Manali; road conditions can shift stop times, especially early or late in the season.

Start

Manali

0 KM 2,050 M

Departure point. Most vehicles leave early morning to clear the tunnel and passes with daylight to spare.

~1 HR IN

Atal Tunnel

~25 KM 3,100 M

The tunnel cuts straight through the Pir Panjal range, replacing the old Rohtang Pass crossing and keeping the route open for more of the year.

~3 HRS IN

Chatru

~65 KM 3,600 M

A common tea-stop as the road climbs, with the Chandra river and the Spiti range coming into view.

~5 HRS IN

Kunzum Pass

~110 KM 4,590 M

The highest point on the route and the gateway into Spiti proper — also the turnoff for Chandratal Lake.

~6.5 HRS IN

Losar

~140 KM 4,079 M

Spiti's first village on this route, and usually the first place to refuel or grab a hot meal since Manali.

~8-9 HRS IN

Kaza

~200 KM 3,800 M

Journey's end — Spiti's largest town, and the base most travelers use for Key Monastery, Kibber, Langza, Komic, and Hikkim.
